Yakovlev Yak-1

Yak-1

The Yak-1 was first in a very successful series of Soviet fighters that remained in production throughout the war and served for many years afterward. It is not to be confused with the hairy Asian cow of the same name, which is not nearly as fast (although Yak racing is a very popular sport in Tibet). I could not find a color photo of a Yak-1, but here is one Yak...

Cool stuff for Yak lovers:

One of the most unique and engrossing narratives of the Soviet Air War you'll find is Night Witches, an account of the exploits of women fighter pilots who fought on the Eastern Front. Many of them flew the Yak-1 into combat, and have quite a few hair-raising stories to tell about it.
